In a rare and historic moment in the history of homelessness in America, Skid Row resident, community activist and Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council-member “General Jeff” has been invited to The White House in Washington, D.C.

As part of the Obama Administration’s effort to better connect with grass-roots individuals and organizations from across the country called the “Community Leaders Briefing Series”, an on-line invitation was sent out over the internet and also through other social media outlets. Formerly homeless and current Skid Row resident General Jeff submitted a request form and was selected to visit The White House to discuss past and current issues and solutions related to Skid Row from a grass-roots perspective.

General Jeff was originally invited to The White House in July, but could not raise the funds necessary to secure a roundtrip airline ticket. Rather than get discouraged, he simply requested a replacement date and was given a new date in August, enough time for him to panhandle the needed amount. The invitation became official after General Jeff was granted a security clearance which was confirmed last Tuesday.

“This will be an historic moment for our community”, says Jeff. “While I intend on hearing what The White House has to say, in my mind it’s more important for them to hear what I have to say”. “Other than Nathaniel Ayers of ‘The Soloist’ fame going to play at The White House, no one from Skid Row has ever gone to speak directly to The White House regarding our community’s issues through our own eyes”, he added.

The symbolic journey will begin next week on Thursday and conclude on Saturday. “These may very well be the three most important days of my life”, General Jeff said. “The hopes and dreams of my community now rest on my shoulders and I hope to return home with solid answers that turn into positive results.”

In a place that normally hosts well-respected and powerful political dignitaries from around the world, this moment will simply be for the “low man on the totem pole”. Already General Jeff is being patted on the back by almost everyone in his community as he continues his day-to-day activism leading up to his departure.

“It’s not about me, it’s about my community. Just to bring back a photo of myself with the President would do wonders for us (Skid Row). But I’m hoping to come home with much, much more”, he states confidently.

The Community Leaders Briefing Series meetings will happen every Friday this summer beginning on June 17 and ending on August 26, it’s last day and also the day that General Jeff will be attending.

Maybe it’s true in folklore when they say “it’s best to save the best for last”!
